After lots of rumours and false starts, there appears to be some credible evidence that Canon is going to release a new DSLR (EOS 5D) on the 22nd of August and to be on shelves by mid-October.

Highlights:

- 12.8 megapixels
- Full frame sensor
- 9 AF points + 6 invisible AF points
- 810grams
- Interchangable focusing screen
- 3 frames per second
- Buffer of 60 frames JPEG, 17 frames RAW
- ISO 100-1600 (ISO 3200 via expansion)
- Still uses BP511 battery
- No integrated battery grip
- No on-board flash

Very tempting. Already started saving up. Did you see the samples? Usable ISO3200! Now it won't matter if your lenses are f/4. The increase in DOF due to FF, and also the incredible ISO performance will make up for it.

Now the next question is AF. Wonder if it'll be fast and accurate enough. Strangely, I still hear people saying that the D60's AF was more accurate than the 20D's - though it was slower.

Any news about how much the 5D will cost in Singapore? Any shop doing pre-orders yet?

Totally agreed, that the landscape shot looked poor. Vignetting at the top left corner and soft bottom edges (couldn't tell with the top right corner, since that was a white cloud). Bear in mind though, it was beta firmware, and probably beta RAW to JPEG conversion software too. The landscape shot was taken somewhere in June, and the camera won't hit the shelves until Oct. So the software has another 4 months to evolve.

What do you think about the other shots taken with the 85 f1.8 and the 100 macro? IMHO they were pretty good even in the corners - and that illustrates that the 5D is capable of great image quality, provided that it is paired with a good lens (sorry, the 17-40L doesn't qualify here, none of Canon's UWAs are very good). But the problem of FF corner softness isn't new, people with the 1Ds and 1Ds2 have been facing the problem all along. Just need to look at what lenses they use and then copy.

They are taking pre-orders for the 5D here. It is a tad above 2.5K GBP. In comparison, the 1D Mark II is selling for about a 100 quid less (S$300). So for around that price, you can either have FF with the 5D, or you can have the 45 point AF and weather sealing for a bit cheaper.

Hmm.. S$6999 is approx GBP2300. That's cheaper than the UK price by about S$600. I'm quite tempted to pick up either a 5D or an old 1D2 when I get back to Singapore this December.

But then again, it's still quite a bit of money to spend (about 1.5% of the price of a house!). You can even buy a 10 year old VW Golf for that price over here. Since I'm not making money off photography, it's not easy to make such a plunge. Might be worth waiting till March or so to see what the replacement of the 20D is like.

Or maybe get lenses first - the 24-105 F4L IS looks interesting. Though a bit sideways step for us since we already have the Tamron here at f2.8.

What do you think? You gonna go for a new body this year?

Yeah... I know what you mean about the range. When I go travelling, I use the 17-40L + 50 +70-200L. The Tamron stays at home. But there have been quite a few occassions when I did wish I had the f2.8 (especially in those dark churches or museums in Europe where you can't use flash).

If you are planning to get the 5D, better read this (good verdict):

Essentially, ISO3200 on the 5D is like ISO1600 on the 20D. You get 1 extra stop! Maybe getting the 5D will be cheaper than getting 1 stop faster lenses. You can motivate the purchase by saying that you're saving money!

But I still can't get over the price though. Would have preferred to settle for a 1.3x crop version of the 5D for $1500 less. It just doesn't make sense that a new 5D costs more than a new 1D2 (non-n). I'm just  not willing to pay that much. It's either wait for the 30D, or buy a 2nd hand 5D when the price comes down.

Can anybody explain to me how the sensor size of a camera affects the depth of field of a lens? Have the laws of physics been changed by Canons properganda department?
I am sure this is a very good camera (I have used one and it is) however it dosn't change universal laws, depth of field is affected by the pane of focus and the size of the aperture; not by sensor size or lens focal length.
