Nikon has announced the D80, a 10 megapixel 1.5x crop DSLR. It uses the same CCD as the Sony Alpha 100. Dpreview has a preview of the new camera here:

Thanks for letting us know - looking at the feature list however I suspect I will still be aiming for a D200 to replace my D70 Tone

If you've got the budget for it, the D200 will be a bigger step up from the D70. The D80 is less of a jump, but brings great value at the price point. You may also want to look out for reviews on the Sony A100, since it uses the same CCD.

I can tell you that many Canon users would love to have the 10MP (although they'll tell you the opposite and that ISO performance is more important). Very useful for wildlife photography. But I guess at the end of the day it depends a lot on what you intend to shoot.

I see this as being good news for Canon users as well. I've only skimmed the specs for the D80, but it looks like it's around the same sort of camera as the Canon 5D for half the price. Competitive price pressure can only be good news for consumers and Canon will have to respond.

Competition is always good news. Though I wouldn't place the D80 and the 5D in the same class. Nikon has nothing in the range of the 5D, and likewise, Canon has nothing in the range of the D80. The one to watch now is Canon's response - announcement is expected in Sept.

I've just got one - Jessops (UK) have them for 599 (body only). It is a big step forward from the D70/s. Physically it is quite like the D50, although significantly more robust feeling. Functionally it is very close to the D200. It is significantly easier to use - an important factor for me, as I have arthritis in my hands. The image quality is significantly better than the D70 - in particular WB is handled better.

Have purchased the Nikon D80 + DX 18-135 lens by part exchanging my Canon 300D +Tamron 24-135 and Canon70-200 L F4.....feel a bit of a traitor but right decision after seeing Canon 400D (30D good reviews but overpriced). Very impressed with build and functions though i do feel Canon has the edge as regards noise.
