Profit margin?

Hello all,

I understand that this may be considered a private question, and therefore one that not many people may want to answer publicly, but I have an opportunity coming up to be commissioned to provide some of my shots to a business for their decorating purposes. I need to come up with a proposal including how much I would charge. I have no idea what a reasonable amount of profit to ask for is. Is there a pretty standard percent profit that people know about? I just don't have any basis of comparison to know if I would be asking too much/too little. Any thoughts?

Alex this is always a question for me. There is a book on Amazon that may help "Pricing Photography: The Complete Guide to Assignment & Stock Prices". On the other hand you may want to do some research, call up some photographers that offer corproate art and ask their prices. You may get a few responses after a few phone calls. Obviously I wouldn't tell them about you being competition. Just enquire. You can also walk around some galleries and check prices for prints. Another factor to consider is prints per edition that you will be offering. The more limited the edition the higher price you could command.

I'm sure there are some folks on here that could share some insight even if it's not specific figures.

My 2 cents or 2 pence! Hope it helps.

i don't think there's any limit to the amount of profit you can make off photographs

i tell people to charge as much as they can muster with a straight face.

it's your intellectual property after all, plus it's value is oh so subjective

ps. if you're charging a million bucks per shot and you don't get clients. then it's time to adjust your rates a tad
