Guys, i am hoping you can give me some tips on how to deal with this technique.

The shots with a name are HDR. The ones named non hdr are....well, I gues you can work it out?

HDR to me seem to lose detail, and are too bright, even when I chose 3-4 really underexposed shots to merge, they still come out bright. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

I have put some examples here for your perusal.

Not all scenes are suitable for HDR - it can result in flat looking images that look a bit artificial, especially if over done. How are you doing your HDR (what technique)?

I use Photomatix Pro and get great results, great as far as I am concerned. They do not suffer from what you are suffering from. The resulting images that is!

Go to this URL http://www.hdrsoft.com/ and try a "Free trial version". Then make up your own mind.

You can look at one of my images done like this with ToneMapping as well at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gholmes/353483183/

One can also do it with one RAW image and tonemapping in 16 bit images.

good luck,
gholmes

Firstly are you making your HDR shots from one RAW file? If so then it's not strictly speaking a HDR photo.

I used to use Photomatix to do my HDR's now I just take many exposures to do the HDRs that I like. For instance the link below is a HDR but it doesn't look it.

http://alakija.shutterchance.com/photoblog/47634.htm

The thing is I combined 3 different exposures and masked out the bits I thought were too unatural. In the original shot (one exposure) you couldn't see the faces of the child crying.
