archive divided...

Hi!

Looking at my archive I discover that it's been divided in (two) pages! Why!? Why not divide it by month instead? Hmm... no, that's to complicated... but please as soon as possible at least put the "page1 page 2" links in the upper left corner just above the thumbs... that is a much more sufficient placing, and more "natural" website-looking...

(Yes I'm the whining one as usual...)

We used to have 128 images per page - but the feedback was that this was too much and it was taking too long to load. So we decided to reduce it to 30 per page (which is also approx 1 month). What do you think of this concept? Or is it too little now?

I see no problem with it as it is currently. We have a manageable amount per page plus the option to sort images by category. I am still on dial up at home so it gives me some options rather than struggling to open up over 100 thumbnails each time.

Just my 0.02

Ok then... I retreat... can't argue with the dial up issue (I am spoiled with high-speed broadband at home...) And I btw really like and use the category/theme option!

But I still would like to see a pagelinking in the top as well...

I guess 30 images per page makes sense if that is the storage limit that will be applied to a free account. However, I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that I want people to look at my past posts as well, so I'd go along with minelmio's suggestion of relocating (or duplicating) the page navigator. Or maybe give the viewer the option to change the number of images on the page.

We've tweaked the archive page a bit. At the moment, the new code is available only on my photoblog, pending a bit more testing before we roll the new version out to everyone. If you'd like to make comments, you can see the new version here:

Your comments would be most appreciated.

It's a definite bonus having the page navigator at the top as well as the bottom. My only gripe now is that the page link to click on is a single digit, i.e. a small target area. Small target areas = precise mouse movements = tension in the wrist/arm and ultimately RSI. (I have this gripe about most trendy-looking websites). The effect could be mitigated by having a 'next' and 'previous' link as well. These are bigger words and therefore bigger target areas for the mouse.

That's a good point Steve. Ergonomics is important to us, but we've not thought about RSI yet (though with all the coding, we'll need it for ourselves soon). We'll look into using the next / prev arrows like what's at the top right of the photos. Would that be helpful or do you prefer something bigger? I'm not in the country this weekend, so it might only be implemented next week.

From a physically ergonomic perspective, the bigger the better, but you'll need to balance that with the visual ergonomic requirements. Basically, anything bigger than a single digit would probably be ok.

Just a note on the original thread question. Would it be possible to set your connection speed for a user and then determine the preferences based on that. A bit like being able to choose 'Flash' or 'non-Flash'. If you have a fast connection you could get manage a larger number of thumbnails rather than if you were set to say dial-up for example. Just another thought.

I've found some spare time to do more coding after work today. The archive page now has arrows to navigate between the previous and next page. The font size has also been increased slightly (from 12px to 14px), and it's been made a bit more asthetic pleasing.

A demo of the latest design is available at:
http://duane.shutterchance.com/archive.php

As usual, any feedback would be most welcome. Once we've finalised the code and checked a bit more for bugs, it will be propagated to everyone's blogs.

BeakerSt: The speed of the internet connection is a good point - we might put something like that in the user preferences. Though the reason behind the reduction to 30 images was also to reduce the amount of scrolling people need to get to the bottom of the page. Ergonomic research shows that a lot of people don't take the effort to scroll down. If it's not immediately visible, they miss it and go on to click through to the next page.
